Elden Fragrances is a cottage industry conducted out of the owner, Ellen Walsh’s, home in central North Carolina. You can also find them in person at conventions, craft fairs, and fan events in the Raleigh area and across the East Coast. 

Ellen Walsh has been perfuming as a hobby since she was a child, when she received a “make your own” scent kit for her eighth birthday. She even still has some of the perfumes she made back then!

As she grew older and geekier and fell in love with some of her favorite fandoms, she combined her two passions by blending fan fragrances inspired by some of the characters she admired – first for herself, then as gifts for friends and family, and finally she took the plunge and launched Elden Fragrances as a sole proprietorship in 2017.

With the support and assistance of her partner James, she handles everything from the perfume development itself, to production and shipping, to site maintenance and social media management, and everything else that goes into running a small crafting business (she’s writing this paragraph in third person, too!).

5% of the proceeds from sales of any fragrance or candle from the Wizard’s House, Wizard’s Feast, and Space Cowboy collections are donated to good causes – our way of doing some good in the world.

These amounts are calculated and donated quarterly, and do not include payments for shipping, tax, samplers, or mask filters.

For the Harry Potter fragrances and candles, we’ll be donating 5% to support trans youth and gender-affirming medical care in the UK. The primary recipient for donations is the GenderGP Fund. The secondary recipient in the event that the primary recipient is not currently accepting donations is Mermaids UK.

For the Space Cowboys collection, we’ll be donating to promote gender equity and combat sexual harassment in the workplace. The primary recipient for donations is the National Women’s Law Center. The secondary recipient in the event that the primary recipient is not currently accepting donations is the TIME’S UP Foundation.

Please, tell us about it! Knowing what customers want is the life’s blood of any small business, so we always love hearing your ideas and suggestions! Whether you’d like to see our fragrances in another form, such as candles or body wash, or if you have ideas for new fragrances you’d like to try, let us know. If we get enough demand for something (and if we’re being totally honest here, if we love the idea, then “one person” is usually more than enough demand to qualify) and we have the resources to do it, then we’ll absolutely work to expand our products and include your ideas.

One request, however: while we’re delighted to accept broad suggestions for nerdy and geeky fragrances (such as, “I’d love to see a cologne that my favorite action hero would wear!” or “There aren’t enough perfumes that smell like bacon – you should make a whole line!”), if you find your ideas getting much more detailed than that (“He would have a woody fragrance with leather notes, and there would be a smell of smoke from that one awesome scene with the explosion, and also some pine needles because of that time in the forest when…”), please hang onto your ideas for yourself!

Partly, this is to avoid any sort of legal disputes – determining “idea ownership” can be sticky and unpleasant for all parties involved. More importantly, though, you clearly have some great ideas and have put a lot of thought into them! Go to town on them! It’s how Elden Fragrances, and so many other fantastic perfumers, got started. You deserve the right to put your own ideas into action, and we’d be delighted to offer advice or field any questions you have about getting into perfuming.

Of course, you’re always more than welcome to request your ideas in a custom fragrance instead! For an additional discount, you can make that fragrance part of our publicly available collections.

We use a variety of both natural and synthetic fragrance oils, combined with a substance called cyclomethicone, that we use in lieu of the perfumer’s alcohol found in most fragrances. Cyclo is organic and non-alcoholic, so our products won’t dry out your skin like alcohol-based fragrances will. One the contrary, cyclo will actually leave your skin feeling much softer and silkier where you spray your fragrance! Additionally, cyclo helps with the longevity of fragrances, so you’ll find ours tend to linger on your skin for longer than many similar fragrances would.

The specific number of unique oils we use varies depending on the complexity of the fragrance, but you’ll typically find about 5-10 different oils in each fragrance.

Although a few of our scents are derived from natural ingredients, the majority are synthetic. We know, we know, we love the phrase “all-natural” too, but you may be surprised to discover that, unlike most products, synthetic fragrances are often better for you, for the environment, and for your perfume than their natural counterparts!

You can read more on the subject here, but the short version is that synthetic fragrances are more sustainable and environmentally friendly to produce, last longer in the bottle and on the skin, and are less likely to produce an allergic reaction or other negative side effects.

We care deeply about your health and that of our planet, so all of our fragrances are pthalate- and paraben-free, vegan, and not tested on animals, and we ask the same of our suppliers.

By default, our sample-size and 5 mL bottles come leak-proof black caps, while all larger fragrances come with silver atomizers, so you can spray your fragrance to your heart’s content! This is to help preserve the long-term life expectancy of your fragrance, because the spray-cap helps shield the contents of your fragrance bottle from the environment, even as you apply it.

However, we recognize the benefits of dabbing your perfume on as well! There are pros and cons to each method, and we love both equally. If you’d rather avoid the atomizer for any reason, just drop us a line when you send in your order, to let us know what you’re ordering and which bottle(s) you’d rather not have a spray-cap on. We will fit your bottles with a black leak-proof cap instead when we fulfill the order for you.

Most people assume that perfumes are all feminine scents, and colognes are all masculine, but while that’s often the case, the terms actually refer how much of a fragrance is actually made up of fragrance oils, as opposed to the base or additives that also contribute.

A cologne is one of the most mild fragrances, while a perfume is one of the strongest, but there are other, less well-known, fragrances along the scale in between, such as eau de toilette and eau de parfum.

Perfumes are an evolving process! Once they come out of the bottle, they interact with the skin (or test paper) they’re applied to and the air around them, and can often smell very different a few hours later.

The different “notes” refer to the scents that come out after different periods of time: the top notes are what you smell right out of the bottle, the middle notes appear a few minutes later after the top notes dry down, and the base notes come out about 20-30 minutes later, and linger the longest.

Fragrances are a very personal experience that’s highly dependent on body chemistry. When you put a perfume or cologne on your skin, it interacts with dozens of different personal and environmental factors that could make the same fragrance oil smell delightful on one person but not-so-much on another, or very strong on one person but very weak on another.

If you find yourself running into this issue frequently, try testing perfumes from a variety of different accords (for example, floral scents vs. fruity scents), and see if you can isolate which ingredients your chemistry is reacting badly to.

Just like how body chemistry can affect a fragrance’s smell, it can also affect how long the fragrance lasts. Some people are naturally what perfumers call “throwers,” meaning that fragrances dissipate very quickly off their skin.

There are a few tricks you can try to keep your preferred scent around, though! Fragrances have a hard time lingering on dry skin, so try applying your fragrance right out of the shower, before you’ve dried off! If you don’t have time for a full shower, you can use unscented moisturizer or an occlusive ointment like Vaseline a few minutes before you put your perfume or cologne on. Also, make sure not to rub your wrists together after you apply your scent, as that will break down the fragrance’s structure much more quickly.

For health and sanitation reasons, we are unable to accept any returns, so all sales are final. Additionally, we encourage our customers to try samples of our products before purchasing a full-size bottle, to ensure that the fragrance you receive meets your best expectations.

We’re so sorry about that! We package our fragrances for maximum endurance in the postal service, but sometimes accidents do happen. Please notify us the moment you receive a damaged product.

If we receive sufficient documentation of the damage (e.g, a photo of the broken bottle or a scan of a USPS “We Care” letter) within seven days from the date you received your order, we will issue you a full replacement for your fragrance.
